Black and White Kodak Tri-x 400 35mm Film | Learning How to shoot B+W Film

A few years ago I took an online film photography course that Clickin Moms hosted and Sandra Coan taught. Y'all, that woman knows her stuff. Follow her on Insta @SandraCoan and check out her studio newborn and family portraits. They are so dreamy!! So during my film class we learned about film sizes small (35mm) and medium (120mm), film stock type and film camera brands. If you stick with the same brand of your digital camera you can cross over back and forth with your same lenses on your film camera body. Pretty sweet!!

I found my first film camera at a resale shop for $20. It was a beautiful Canon AE-1 and had a 50mm 1.8 attached with it circa 1979! If you shoot digital photography be thankful for automatic focus. That camera definitely made it hard sometimes to get every thing in focus every time especially with my almost two year old running around I shot with this camera for three years before I upgraded to my current film camera a Canon EOS 600 which I found on FB marketplace also for $20. Score!!!! This camera body is so similar to all my other Canon bodies I've had, and it's so easy to use.

This post is all about my first trial with black and white film on Kodak Tri-x 400 35mm. Black and white film is different from color stock. You have to learn to meter for the highlights to allow more light to come into the shadows. If you're looking for more a darker style in your black and white film you can meter for the shadows. I have some favorites from that roll of film too. Be on the lookout for another blog post of black and white film!

Here are some of my favorite shots from around our house and little town of Bay City, Texas! I took these images in the summer of 2016 - look how little Cadence was. She'll be 5 next month. So many heart eyes!!

Do you like the idea of film? Have you ever shot with a film camera before? If you want to know more about film photography leave me a question in the comments below! :)
